Stop Smoking With Hypnosis - Does it Work?

When you think of hypnosis what comes to mind?

What I think of is the old cliche stage show. The one where the hypnotist gets puts a group of people in a trance and gets them to behave in strange and funny ways.

When it comes to quitting smoking, hypnosis is used in a completely different and more serious manner. It is becoming one of the most popular quit smoking methods.

Here is how it works.

There are two separate areas of the mind, the conscious and subconscious. The conscious mind is the part that controls thoughts and actions. It helps you to perform tasks and activities such as walking, talking etc. The conscious mind thinks about the outside world and how we interact in it.

The subconscious works the stuff you don't even think about. It runs our bodily functions and has no concept of the outside world. It does not know the difference between reality and imaginary. Whatever the conscious mind says, the subconscious goes along with.

The idea of hypnotherapy is to go beyond the conscious mind into the subconscious. This can occur when the individual is put into a state of deep relaxation. Once this has been achieved, thoughts can be fed directly into the subconscious, which will then be perceived as reality. For example, you can train the subconscious believe you are a non smoker. Even if it is false, the subconscious will believe it to be true.

Other thoughts that can be put into the subconscious include:

  • Smoking is not pleasurable
  • Smoking does not relax you
  • Smoking does not reduce stress
  • You do not need NRT'S (patches gums etc) to quit smoking.
  • Quitting smoking is easy

These are but a few examples. If your subconscious firmly believes these things then it is said that the withdrawal symptoms of quitting smoking will be minimal if present at all. This in turn makes the quitting process easy.

There are a couple of ways to use hypnosis in order to quit smoking. You could go see a licensed hypnotherapist who can give you one on one sessions. Alternatively there are self hypnosis C.D's, D.V.D's etc you can use from the comfort of your own home. The latter are a much cheaper alternative.

I am yet to be fully convinced by this method. Yes, there are many success stories out there but there are  also many who say hypnotherapy did nothing from them. It is said that hypnotherapy will only work on those who want to be hypnotised.

I guess like most quit smoking aids you have to be a true believer to get the most out of it.
