Ten-Ways to Stop Smoking Now - A Clinician's List of Popular Smoking Cessation Methods

Written by V Pender on 10/31/2008

I have been helping people stop smoking for years; and, I have used a variety of methods. I can tell you from experience that no one way is better than any other way - they all work to a certain extent. But they might not all work for you; that's why there's more than one way to stop smoking. Of course, I have my favorite methods based on my own clinical experience - and on which methods get the best results in the shortest amount of time. The key to quitting smoking, however, is finding a method that works for you. Here's a list of ten-ways that are commonly used by people to quit smoking:

1. Cold-turkey/Will-power. This method is probably the most common method of quitting; though it may be the most difficult. Quitting with will power alone requires a firm resolve to quit smoking and a strong mind that is able to reason-through the cravings with mental focus and determination.

2. Hypnosis. Hypnosis is a very old, very commonly-used, and very effective method of quitting smoking or changing practically any habit you no longer want to keep. Hypnosis and self-hypnosis are completely safe, and incredibly effective - assuming you have a good therapist.

3. Emotional Freedom Techniques (EFT). I have seen someone completely lose a cigarette craving in less than two-minutes by simply tapping on a couple acupuncture points while focusing on their craving. EFT is by far the quickest method I have used to help people stop smoking; and it is highly-effective. Best of all, it can be learned for FREE and it can be used on practically any mental, emotional, or physical problem, condition, issue, or habit.

4. Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP). Like hypnosis and EFT, NLP helps change the way you associate thoughts and behaviors - and anchors and triggers - that connect the events in your life with the behavior of smoking. This method can be much quicker than hypnosis, and is very effective.

5. Psychological Kinesiology (Psych-K). This is another technique designed to "re-wire" the way your desires are expressed as thought and action. Psych-K is one of the more effective change-techniques being used today.

6. Tapas Acupressure Technique (TAT). TAT, like EFT, utilizes the acupuncture meridian system - without using needles. By focusing your attention on the problem or condition you wish to clear or eliminate, while using acupuncture points, the stored tension causing the unwanted behavior is released.

7. The BodyTalk System. Another method that uses both kinesiology and the acupuncture meridian system, BodyTalk is a complete health care modality that can eliminate a smoking habit as if it were nothing more than an allergy (allergies are also easily eliminated with most of these methods). BodyTalk is safe, effective, and non-invasive; but you'll need a trained practitioner for this method to work.

8. Acupuncture. Many of the methods on this list are based on the acupuncture meridian system - and the fact that you don't actually have to penetrate the skin with needles to affect change in that system. Nonetheless, the needles work too. Acupuncture really is virtually painless; and it is somewhat effective with helping people stop smoking.

9. Laser. Laser treatment involves directing a cold-laser at specific acupuncture points to reduce the craving, increase metabolism, and reduce stress. While opponents claim that laser therapy results are indistinguishable from placebos, the same claim can be made about most pharmaceuticals, as well. I do not have personal experience with this approach; but people have used this method with success. And, don't discount the placebo effect - quitting is quitting.

10. Drugs. In my mind and experience, drugs are the most dangerous and least effective of these methods. Cigarettes are employed as stress-management tools; and drugs that alter the way cigarettes work, or alter the way you feel about cigarettes, without removing the underlying stress, or causes for the smoking, is more like sweeping a problem under the rug than solving it. All drugs have side-effects; and some of them are even worse than those of cigarettes.

I recommend you check into each of these methods if you are trying to stop smoking; and you should probably start with the safest, quickest, easiest, and least-expensive methods first - for obvious reasons. Though the cold-turkey method is the least expensive of all, it is potentially the most difficult, as well. EFT, TAT, and Hypnosis are the three quickest, safest, easiest, and - with free manuals available online - potentially the least expensive of all of the clinical methods listed. But, ultimately, you need to find the method that works for you. And, if you use a clinician, or therapist of some kind, you need to find one you resonate with. And, most important of all, you need to make sure that your firm decision to stop smoking - by any means - is a decision you are making for yourself and nobody else. It's okay to want to stop smoking for your spouse or children; but, if you aren't doing it for you, your chances of success aren't that great. Look into each of these methods; and just remember that if someone else has done it, you can too. Good luck!
