How to Stop Smoking Cigarettes
Written by V Pender on 7/01/2009Stopping smoking doesn't have to be as hard as you think it might be. The most important part to remember about stopping is to not build up to it.
That means no quit dates, no plans, none of that. All that does is build up fear about quitting, and you've got enough of that already (I mean, everybody is already telling you that it's impossible to quit smoking!)
Instead, you need to think about what makes you want to smoke. Smoking isn't the physical addiction that everyone hawking nicotine replacements will tell you, it's all inside your mind. You don't smoke at regular intervals throughout the day, you smoke when you feel stressed or you get a break from work. It's a mental addiction based on triggers that happen around you.
If you identify what causes you to start smoking, you'll be able to predict when you will get cravings, which will make it a lot easier to stop them in their tracks. It'll also make it easier to, if you do feel cravings, get away from things that motivate you to smoke.
The most important part about quitting, though, is to not give in to your cravings. That sounds a bit silly, but if you actually sit and time them, your cravings for cigarettes only last a few minutes. Sure, it feels like a decade, but it's really just a few minutes that you can easily cut down by doing something that doesn't motivate you to smoke. After a few minutes, you'll feel great for not giving in to your cravings!
