Best Way to Quit Smoking - Be Rid of the Habit Once and For All

Cigarettes are parasitic—they take.  When you choose to smoke, a brainwashing occurs that makes you, the addict, believe that you receive something beneficial from smoking.  Cigarettes not only negatively impact your lungs, heart, and skin; they also affect your nervous system which ultimately takes a toll on your self-esteem.  Where is the benefit?  You convinced yourself to believe a lie.

You Believed a Lie

You became addicted to cigarettes by believing a series of lies.  It is time to know the truth.  In fact, smoking drains your time.  Imagine the hands of a clock.  Now imagine that the hands race each other around and around as fast as possible rather than measure time.  The clockmaker changed the goals and purpose of the clock.  This is what cigarette smoking does—it speeds up time and ages you. It changes your goals and purpose.  Your choice to smoke robs you.  In all honesty, it is not just an issue of your life span, but also your quality of life that is lessened.  The time you spend smoking is time you are not spending working, playing, being creative, loving your loved ones, etc., etc.  We believe we take a moment for ourselves, but cigarettes take moments upon moments from us.

We believe smoking gives us something to look forward to—a smoke after a meal, a smoke with some friends and good conversation, a smoke after a long days work. We lie to ourselves.  There is a whole world out there of things to look forward to that won't leave us with heavy financial consequence and punishing illness in the end.  We believe that we can not quit. We believe it is hard to quit.  Once again, we lie to ourselves.  Your thinking can be your biggest enemy in this case—you conditioned your brain to think in a pattern to preserve the smoking habit at all costs, you being the cost.  You need to reprogram your brain to think in a pattern that preserves your well being!  Discipline is imperative once you actually quit.  If you return to the smoking time and time again, you teach yourself that you can not be trusted and that you are weak.

The moment you feel the urge to smoke and experience a withdrawal, simply be present and feel your emotions and physical reactions.  Just be still. Don't act.  Just breath.  Do not entertain or involve yourself with persistent thoughts.  Try to watch the thoughts like watching a movie.  If you observe  them you are not a victim to them.  Your addiction-preserving thoughts only justify smoking a cigarette, believing that smoking alleviates the urge.  But smoking caused the urge to smoke.  The only thing that can alleviate the urge once and for all is to stop the habit.  Once you focus on the withdrawal pain you realize that it is not nearly as bad as your fear and your over thinking led you to believe.  You see that you can overcome this addiction.  You build confidence and the urge to smoke lessens with each victory.   You live your life, smoke-free!
