Quit Smoking With Nicotine Replacement Therapy

Written by V Pender on 2/12/2009

A doctor once told a national TV presenter that quitting smoking was probably more difficult than coming off hard narcotics such as heroin or crack cocaine. As most of us smokers have never been addicted to illegal drugs we probably can't comment on that with any real authority. Even so, those of us who have either quit or attempted to quit smoking in the past can agree that smoking cessation is certainly no walk in the park! But have the recent advancements in Nicotine Replacement Therapy made stopping smoking any easier for quitters in the twenty-first century, or is it still the ordeal it always was?

Those well meaning folks who have never been hooked on tobacco are quick to give out advice such as 'Why don't you just stop?', or 'Have you tried using a bit of willpower?' and other such helpless remarks! It's probably fair to say that only a smoker can fully relate to the phenomenon of craving and the mental obsession that grows into the very fabric of a true nicotine addict. A generation or so ago, weaning off tobacco used to be limited to the cold turkey approach. This usually meant lots of nail biting and mood swings. Fortunately, today's quitters can have a much easier time of it all thanks to the various nicotine replacement aids available.

How Does Nicotine Replacement Therapy Work?

Before outlining the various nicotine replacement therapies, let's first take a look at why we need them. The moment the body is deprived of nicotine there are certain side effects which occur to a greater or lesser degree, depending on the individual. These often include such things as tetchiness, an inability to concentrate fully, anxiety, low energy levels, and in some cases, nausea. It's hardly surprising then that so many smokers prefer to hold onto their habit than give it up. The severity and length of these withdrawal symptoms depend on how long someone has smoked, and the quantities.

Nicotine Replacement Therapy (NRT) increases your chance of quitting smoking purely by removing these physical cravings and unpleasant side effects which are otherwise endured by the cold turkey approach. Put simply, NRT gets controlled amounts of nicotine into the bloodstream without the need to smoke. When the body's not craving the drug, those uncomfortable side effects do not kick in. This in turn results in a much smoother weaning off the smoking of tobacco.

Nicotine Replacement Therapy Options!

There are numerous nicotine replacement therapy options available today both on the high street and under prescription. All are pretty effective and what choice people opt for is down to personal preference. It's worth pointing out though, that aside from being addictive, smoking is also extremely habit forming. If you could film yourself during the course or a single day, and then play that movie back at fast speed, you would probably be amazed at how many times that hand to mouth movement is performed during conscious hours. Therefore, folks having difficulty with both the habit and the addiction often prefer to wean off using an inhaler.

Inhalers are just one of a number of effective nicotine replacement therapies available. Other proven products are nicotine gums, nicotine patches, various tablets or lozenges, and now nicotine nasal sprays, which are perhaps the strongest form of nicotine replacement therapy available to smokers. If in doubt, consult a medical professional who will surely help you to make a more informed decision.

If it's to be, it's up to me!

Perhaps the most crucial ingredient for successful smoking cessation is a positive and determined attitude. Those people, who quit for someone else, i.e. nagging spouse, boss, workmate etc, stand less chance of staying stopped. It is only when you yourself want to stop smoking more than you want to continue, that you will kick the habit for life. Support from family and friends, and a good stop smoking aid, are perhaps vital to your attempt, but all of this is pretty useless unless your heart is in it. Remember to remind yourself of that age old saying; If it's to be, it's up to me! Good luck!

How to Quit Smoking Hypnosis

Written by V Pender on 2/10/2009

Just about everyone who smokes has tried to kick the habit at some point or another or at least is thinking about quitting. It is a deadly habit with a whole host of negative consequence for your health and is it vitally important to give it up if you want to remain in good health. Since the results of continuing to smoke are so serious, any effort to quit should be applauded - but as you probably know, it is a very difficult habit to break and you've probably already tried at least once and find yourself once again lighting up. If you are trying to think of ways to quit smoking, hypnosis is a therapy which can be effective even where other treatments have failed you in the past.

While cold turkey is always an option, you may well have given this method an attempt and found just how tough it is to succeed this way. It has helped many to quit, but it requires a whole lot of strength and will power in order to kick the habit this way - you need to cope with the symptoms of nicotine withdrawal (which are very unpleasant, as you certainly know) while still battling the cravings which are driving you to pick up another cigarette. Obviously, cold turkey is not the answer for every smoker who would like to rid themselves of the habit. Fortunately, there are other methods you can try which offer an easier path to becoming smoke free.

Nicotine replacement therapy - a treatment using the over-the-counter nicotine patches, lozenges and other products can work for you, but a lot of smokers find themselves quickly right back where they started when using this method. Since nicotine replacement therapy just replaces a harmful source of nicotine with a less harmful form, it does not actually help many smokers successfully wean themselves off of the drug. When using these products, you still crave nicotine - and it is just too easy to fall off of the wagon and have a cigarette.

Another choice is any of the prescription smoking cessation drugs on the market. However, these products do not come without a certain degree of risk. With pharmaceuticals, there is always a chance of harmful side effects and interactions with other prescription medications you may be taking. A lot of us would rather avoid these kinds of products and instead choose something more natural.

One such natural and side effect free technique to help you quit smoking, hypnosis can successfully free you of the smoking habit without the side effects of prescription medications or the gnawing withdrawal symptoms of cold turkey.

Hypnosis aimed at smoking cessation involves communicating directly with your subconscious to change your habits. While you are hypnotized, the hypnotherapist can place the suggestions which can help you to become smoke free for good, often in just one session of hypnosis.

The Best Stop Smoking Aid I Have Used

Written by V Pender on 2/07/2009

div style=clear:both;/divpI was a smoker for twenty years, and tried to quit multiple times before I finally found the way to do it without relapsing. There are a lot of products out there, but I will tell you right now the best stop smoking aid is not a prescription drug or an expensive medical treatment. If you are looking for the best stop smoking aid available, read on to find out what worked for me./ppstrongManaging Severe Nicotine Withdrawal Symptoms/strong/ppWhen you first quit smoking, your body goes through a very uncomfortable adjustment period as the addictive nicotine and other chemicals that your body has become dependent on start to dissipate. Every time I had tried to quit before, the withdrawal symptoms would eventually force me back to smoking. I found that the nicotine replacement therapies, like the gum or lozenges, would make me feel a little bit better, but left me with a scratchy throat or upset stomach. Also, that stuff is not cheap! In the end, even if I managed to extend my time away from cigarettes by a few extra days, the gum didn't help me quit entirely./ppI needed something that would help reduce the cravings and anxiety, but also allow my body to completely eradicate all traces of nicotine from my body. Hypnosis to Quit Smoking Today

Written by V Pender on 2/05/2009

If you have tried to quit smoking before, you know all too well how much of a challenge it can be to kick this deadly habit. Smoking has serious; deadly serious consequences for your health and it is essential that you give up the habit in order to protect your health. More than half of lifelong smokers are eventually killed by their habit - don't become another one of these tragic statistics. There are a lot of different ways to kick the habit; you might have tried using some of these in the past - but if you are reading this article, it stands to reason that these methods have been less than effective in your case. If you are still struggling to quit, you should give some thought to using hypnosis to quit smoking.

Just flat out giving up the habit is something which many people try o do on their first attempt to quit smoking. Cold turkey has worked for a lot of people, but it is certainly not for everyone. Quitting in this way takes a huge amount of will power and requires a large degree of personal strength as well. You know how nicotine craving can gnaw at you; and dealing with this craving and the withdrawal symptoms is far from an easy thing to do - thankfully, there are more painless ways to quit smoking than this.

There are prescription drugs which you can try in your effort to kick the habit - of course, you will have to have these prescribed by your physician and there can be side effects and drug interaction which result from taking these medications. There are methods of quitting smoking which do not have these kinds of side effects, however - but of course anything which gets you to quit is definitely a good thing. Hypnosis to quit smoking is something which many see as a more attractive option when trying to break free of the deadly habit of smoking.

You can also try nicotine replacement therapy - these use over the counter products such as nicotine gum, lozenges and inhalers, as well as the nicotine patch. However, these just provide the smoker with a less harmful way of getting the same nicotine fix. While it does not have the same health risks as are associated with smoking, nicotine replacement therapy often fails to solve the real problem - nicotine addiction. This makes it too easy of a thing to fall back into smoking cigarettes again, since the craving for nicotine is still very much present.

Using hypnosis to quit smoking offers a natural, non-invasive form of therapy which is free of the side effects seen in pharmaceutical products for smoking cessation, does not leave you addicted to nicotine as does nicotine replacement therapy and does not involve the kind of suffering seen when trying to quit cold turkey.

Hypnotherapy is effective since it communicates with your mind on a subconscious level to free you of the behavioral patterns which lead you to keep smoking. The hypnotist will place you into a hypnotic state and give you suggestions which can help you to give up smoking for good. This is a smoking cessation treatment which really works - often in a single session!

Top Three Tips to Quit Smoking

Written by V Pender on 2/03/2009

For some people giving up smoking can seem like the biggest challenge they have ever faced in their life. I know how hard it can be - I lost count of the number of times I tried and failed to break the habit before I finally succeeded. Along the way I used various different products and techniques, and read up on all the literature I could get my hands on, and I think got some idea of what works well and what doesn't work so well. So here are my top 3 tips to help you quit smoking:

1 - Take things one hour and one day at a time. Most people would probably say that is what they are doing anyway, but if you know how to use it properly this can be more that just a general approach, it can be a specific technique for overcoming the worst cravings.

Firstly, you may have noticed that when you think about never smoking again it immediately makes you want a cigarette really badly. So try not to think about it like this. Secondly, if you pay attention to your thoughts and feelings when you are experiencing nicotine withdrawal and cravings you will notice that there is never actually a single moment when the cravings are too strong to resist (although it may seem like it). Rather, it is the thought of these cravings continuing all day and beyond that makes it seem unbearable. The problem is that it just wears you down. You can get a "I'll just hold off until lunchtime", or "I'll just try to do another hour" or whatever it may be. When you succeed in doing this it gives you a sense of achievement which is very motivating, and it's much easier to do that putting up with it when you have no fixed end in sight. Also the cravings are not of constant intensity, but come and go. So if you use this to get through the rough patches then when you reach your short term goal the intense craving should have subsided.

2 - If you relapse and smoke even a single cigarette, then just start smoking again and set another date to quit again, perhaps a few days later. This may seem counter-productive but otherwise it is just to easy to say to yourself "I'll just have one and it won't make a difference", and you never make that final break. One every couple of days soon becomes one a day, then a few per day, and so on.

3 - Use relaxants. This is one I discovered for myself by accident, and have never heard from anyone else, but it worked very well for me. I was having trouble sleeping and so bought some herbal sleeping tablets. They didn't help with the insomnia very much, but they did take the edge of my cravings, and I started taking them late afternoon every day to help get through the evening, for about a week or so. These, or herbal anti-stress remedies, can really help with the agitation and frustration of excess nervous energy which many people find exasperates their cravings.

I hope these tips help you to quit smoking and lead a healthier and wealthier life!

Smoking is one of the very hardest habits to quit; according to many experts, it is harder to give up smoking than it is to stop using addictive drugs such as cocaine! While giving up the habit can be one of the best things you could ever do for your health, it is also incredibly challenging and the withdrawal symptoms can be severe. Since it is so imperative that you quit smoking on order to protect your health, there have been many methods developed and many products on the market intended to assist smokers who want to quit break the habit for good. Some use nicotine replacement therapy, some quit cold turkey and just ride out the withdrawal and still others choose to quit smoking with hypnosis.

The idea of using hypnosis to break the smoking habit used to raise a lot of eyebrows, but hypnotherapy is now well established as an effective therapy to help people overcome nicotine and other addictions. You can quit smoking with hypnosis even if other therapies have proven to be less than effective for you.

The idea of hypnosis is to place the person being hypnotized into a trancelike state where it is easier to implant suggestions in the subconscious mind. Of course, like any other kind of addiction recovery, you first have to want to quit or no therapy will be 100% effective. However, if you are trying to quit smoking with hypnosis you have already acknowledged the need to quit and hypnotherapy can be incredibly effective in helping you to break the habit for good.

Hypnotherapy works for many smokers and can be effective where other therapies fail. We're not all cut out for cold turkey and nicotine replacement can leave you simply addicted to another form of nicotine. Attempting to quit smoking with hypnosis is also free of the negatives of some of the other treatment options which are available.

Many of the smoking cessation drugs on the market (most of which require a prescription) were originally created to treat other ailments and may have some very serious side effects which most of us would prefer to avoid. Hypnotherapy offers a more natural alternative to these pharmaceutical options.

A session of hypnosis intended to help someone quit smoking will consist of the hypnotist placing the smoker into a hypnotic state and planting suggestions which can help the smoker quit, often with near-immediate results. The hypnotist may use suggestions including telling you that you are not a smoker and therefore have no desire whatever to smoke. They may also plant the suggestion that you hate cigarettes and cannot stand the smell. This can have dramatic results, with many smokers being made to feel ill upon smelling cigarette smoke following the hypnotherapy session, even if it has only been a matter of hours since they last lit up themselves!

If you are trying to quit smoking, hypnotherapy is a treatment which has helped countless people kick the habit for good and is certainly worthy of your consideration.

Willpower to Quit Smoking - How to Get It

Written by V Pender on 2/01/2009

First of all there must be an honest determination to stop. While the quit smoking aids and various other programs have helped some, without the will power to quit smoking they will have no useful effect at all.

When all is said and done it is still good old fashioned will power that is your best ally in winning the battle to stop smoking. It costs much less money than any of the other programs out there and it is available to anyone who wants it.

Even though it is well documented that smoking is expensive and detrimental to one's health, as well as the health of those around you, it remains true that the basic reason people continue to smoke while claiming they want to quit is due to a lack of will power to quit smoking.

Compounding the problem is the mercilessly addictive power of nicotine. Nicotine destroys any will power to quit smoking. When inhaled, nicotine reaches the brain within 15 seconds and the smoker immediately feels a nicotine rush. It is this feeling of satisfaction and pleasure that keeps the smoker coming back again and again for another fix, another hit, another taste of pleasure.

For any one to successfully kick the smoking habit, she must deal specifically with the two issues of nicotine addiction and the will power to quit smoking. Let's take a quick look at will power

Willpower: One source of will power is confidence. A person who is convinced he can stop smoking will have more will power than the person who feels it will be impossible to quit. We gain confidence through success. If you can succeed in resisting a smoke just once, you can refer back to that small victory as a source of strength and confidence when the next urge to smoke comes along. You tell yourself that if you went without smoking at 9:00am this morning, then you can also resist now at 12 noon.

The confidence you gain through your series of small victories will translate into will power to quit smoking. Getting your first victory is the key. You can become an unstoppable force if you will just get started.

If you want to base your first victory on some cold hard facts about smoking, here are just a few to get you to your first victory:

1) Every 6.5 seconds, someone dies due to smoking - WHO (World Health Organization) (That's 1.3 billion world wide - 443,000 are Americans (Center for Disease Control) - 50,000 of them are victims of second hand smoke

2) 40 years of research reveals that 1 out of every 2 smokers will eventually die as a direct cause of their habit - Martin Vessey, Department of Public Health, Oxford University

3) Lung cancer in women has increased over 300 percent in the United States since the "You've come a long way, baby" advertising campaign.

4) Smoking women give birth to underweight babies - Medical Department of Japan's Tohoku University.

5) "People who use cigarettes have the same problem as heroin users. Both groups have a problem of control from morning to night 365 days a year." Dr. Robert Dupont, former director of the United States National Institute of Drug Abuse.

Thousands of others before you have taken the journey toward becoming a non smoker and have arrived safely and successfully at their destination. You can too.

An in depth discussion and very specific instructions on gaining the will power to quit smoking and overcoming nicotine addiction are available in the book "How To Quit Smoking When You Just Can't Stop".
